Learning some Thai language before you visit Thailand is recommended because it can come in handy.  Knowledge of Thai will not guarantee you get the best price in the market but it doesn’t hurt. Most importantly, you will be able to appreciate the Thai people more, and they will certainly appreciate you.

Sawasdee: that is how to say Hello in Thai. If you are a female, you have to say “Sawasdee kaa” if you are a male you have to say “Sawasdee khrab”. 

Upon your arrival in Thailand, you will hear the word ‘Krab’ and ‘Kaa’.  These two words make sentences more polite, similar to ‘please’ in English. It is just as simple as adding ‘Krab’ and ‘Kaa’ at end of any Thai word/sentence. 

  • Kop Khun krab (kaa): Expressing thanks and reply in returning compliments.
  • Kho thoot krab (kaa): I am sorry, excuse me.
  • Chai laeaew krab (kaa): Tha’t ‘s right.
  • Mai Chai: That’s not correct.
  • Naam: Water. 
  • Raan Arhaan: Restaurant.
  • Phom Choe: My name is…….
  • Yin dee thee dai phop krab (kaa): It is nice to meet you.
  • Mai Pen Rai krab (kaa):  Never mind or don’t worry, and always keep smiling.
