
Koh Lanta is a tropical island located off the coast of Krabi in Southern Thailand. Koh Lanta is part of an archipelago of 52 islands, of which Koh Lanta Yai is the biggest. Koh Lanta is quite mountainous and is covered with dense jungle. There is a large variety of wildlife and the terrain makes it idea for trekking.
The sea around koh Lanta is dotted with small islands and coral reefs, providing the perfect opportunity for diving and snorkeling. The best beaches on the island are located along the west coast of Koh Lanta, the tip of which is covered by a beautiful national park and a lighthouse.
Koh Lanta has a unique cultural feature - its diversity of local people, a friendly blend of Thai Muslims, Chinese Muslims and the Chao Lay or sea gypsies. They have lived harmoniously togehter for hundreds of years and will continue to do so, with the slow pace of life on Koh Lanta unchanged, despite tourism developments.
Although the pace of development is slow on Koh Lanta, making it the ideal place for those seeking a beach paradise complete with swaying coconut palms and waterfalls, visitors need not foresake luxury! There are some fantastic resorts on the island, including Layana, Twin Lotus, Rawi Warin and Pimalai.
The best time to visit Koh Lanta is from November to May. Daily flights leave Bangkok for Krabi and transport, such as mini vans, the local ferry or hotel vehicles will be available to take you to the island.
Once there, it is easy to immerse oneself in the easy charms of Koh Lanta. The toughest part is leaving.
