Ayutthaya was the capital of the Kingdom of Siam from 1351. The city boasted a wonderful scattering of scores of ancient Khmer temples and was considered one of Indochina’s most magnificent cities. Although the name "Ayutthaya" means "cannot be conquered", the city was razed and destroyed by the Burmese in 1767, when they burnt all the temples and decapitated all the Buddha statues, taking their heads as war trophies back to Burma. During the fighting, the King of Burma was killed and his army returned to their own land to reelect a king. This saved Siam from being colonised by Burma and the decision to move the capital to Thon Buri (now Bangkok) was made.
